How does it work?

There are five broad areas of CPD qualifying activity:

Topic Example of activity
Professionalism and Ethics Compulsory element [5 hours]. You may wish to use the material available from the Institute as well as other appropriate resources.
Technical Skills Attendance at seminars or detailed research through reading materials, aimed at improving knowledge on a specialist topic eg credit scoring.
Management and Leadership Skills Attendance at an Institute or other event, possibly followed up by a session on coaching or mentoring a member of your team.
Communication Skills Delivery of a presentation at a conference or seminar or taking a course eg on report writing or media skills.
Community / Voluntary activities Participation in Community/ Voluntary activities which require use of business experience eg Committee work for a charitable organisation.

You can achieve your CPD requirement of a minimum of 35 hours from any number of hours in each category subject to the following:

  • The scheme runs from 1 January to 31 December annually and is applicable to all membership categories.
  • In view of the importance of keeping knowledge and skills up to date, it is assumed that members will complete their CPD on an annual basis and maintain a CPD plan.
  • All development activity should be relevant to current role or to future career aspirations.
  • We will undertake a sampling exercise to ensure that members are fulfilling their CPD requirements.
  • All members will require to annually complete an element of Professionalism and Ethics training [5 hours] as part of the overall 35 hours requirement.
  • Personal Mortgage Advisers [PMAs] will need to include 14 hours on mortgage related activities, as well as the Professionalism and Ethics element, as part of the overall 35 hours requirement

The following list gives examples of CPD qualifying activities. It is not intended to be exhaustive:

  • Attendance at training courses
  • Attendance at seminars and conferences
  • Delivery of training sessions
  • Online training modules
  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Self directed and informal learning including reading, use of videos, DVDs
  • Professional body events
  • Secondment to a temporary role
  • Project work
  • Community / Voluntary activities involving the use of Technical Skills, Management and Leadership Skills, Communication Skills or Professionalism and Ethics knowledge
  • Studying for academic or professional qualifications

If you are a member of another professional body, your CPD will count towards our CPD scheme. We will accept confirmation of participation in an alternative CPD scheme providing the 35 hours minimum requirement is met [including the element on Professionalism and Ethics].

We need to make sure our people have the opportunities to learn and qualify right across the full range of disciplines.
