Top jobs for Institute stars Grant and Thorburn Two Fellows of the Chartered Banker Institute – National Australia Bank’s DAVID THORBURN, and Lloyds Banking Group’s PHILIP GRANT – have been promoted to senior posts in their banks.
David, who is currently Executive Director UK, responsible for NAB’s Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, becomes UK Chief Executive Officer-designate in succession to Lynne Peacock who steps down in July after eight years with NAB, seven leading the UK business.
Philip is President of the Chartered Banker Institute and is LBG’s Managing Director of UK Private Banking. He has been appointed Chair of the Group’s Scottish Executive Committee, succeeding Archie Kane, Group Executive Director for Insurance and Scotland, who is retiring.
THORBURN: “Wide experience and strong leadership” David Thorburn has been appointed CEO designate of UK Banking, subject to regulatory approval, and will join the Group’s Executive Committee from 1 July.
National Australia Bank Group CEO Kevin Clyne says: “David Thorburn is an experienced executive with extensive business and retail banking experience coupled with strong leadership qualities.”
He has been a Board Director of Clydesdale Bank PLC since 2002 and has worked closely with Lynne Peacock for seven years helping to “transform the UK businesses and ensure they were kept safe and secure during the worst financial crisis in postwar history”.
In 2008, David became Executive Director UK and joined the Board of National Australia Group Europe Ltd. He was appointed Chief Operating Officer, Clydesdale Bank, in 2002 and assumed the same responsibilities for Yorkshire Bank in late 2004.
A past President of the Chartered Banker Institute, he currently chairs the Scottish Financial Services Industry Skills Gateway and is a member of the Chartered Banker: Professional Standards Board.
GRANT: “A great leader and an ambassador” Philip Grant will report to António Horta- Osório, the Lloyds Banking Group Chief Executive, in his role as Chair of the Scottish Executive Committee. He will continue as Head of UK Private Banking.
The Committee, formed after the acquisition of HBOS by Lloyds TSB, consists of senior executives with responsibility for major Scottish businesses or for a major Group activity with a base in Scotland.
Horta-Osório, LBG Group Chief Executive, says: “We are one of the country’s largest employers and recognise that we have a significant responsibility both to our colleagues and to the communities and businesses in Scotland that we support. Philip will be a great leader and ambassador for the Group in Scotland.”
Philip, currently President of the Chartered Banker Institute, started his career with Bank of Scotland at the age of 17. He has served as Managing Director Intermediary Distribution and Specialist Banking, and as Chief Operating Officer and Integration Director of the Wholesale Division.
