Graduation 2010
The Sir Bruce Pattullo Prize The Sir Bruce Pattullo Prize is awarded to the candidate scoring the highest total mark in the Chartered Banker Course examinations. This prize has been established through the generosity of Sir Bruce Pattullo CBE and the Council of the Institute decided it was appropriate to name the award the Sir Bruce Pattullo prize.
Sir Bruce joined the Bank of Scotland in 1961. After being appointed Manager, Investment Services Department in 1964, he made rapid progress through the ranks. His appointments have included Chief Executive of the British Linen Bank and Deputy Treasurer of Bank of Scotland. In 1988 he was appointed Deputy Governor and Chief Executive of Bank of Scotland and in 1991 he was appointed to a combined role of Governor and Group Chief Executive.
Sir Bruce was nominated to the Council of the Institute in 1977, became a fellow in 1978 and Vice President in 1983. In 1990 he was made President of the Institute, a position he held for two years. In 1998 the Institute recognised the significant contribution that Sir Bruce had made to the work of the Institute by conferring him with its first Honorary Life Membership.
2010 Prizewinner – Danielle Burns, Business Support Manager, Retail Products, UK Retail, RBS, Edinburgh
After graduating from Strathclyde University with a degree in Management Science, Danielle joined RBSG on a Risk Graduate scheme in 2007. The placement encompassed spells in Regulatory, Operational and Credit Risk. Following work on the Retail Transformation Programme within RBS, she was appointed as a Business Support Manager within Retail Products.
Commenting on her success, Danielle said: “The Chartered Banker qualification is particularly important in the current environment, demonstrating to our customers that we are professional.”
John Needham, Director of Risk, Group Operations & COO, Business Services, RBS: “It has never been more important in our industry to demonstrate the high standards of integrity, knowledge and behaviours required to be a member of a profession.”
Torrance McGuffie Memorial Prize This prize is awarded to the individual who obtains the second highest total mark in the Chartered Banker Course examinations.
Torrance McGuffie was a Bank of Scotland Branch Manager in Ayrshire, who always maintained a deep interest in the affairs of the Institute. He believed it was essential that any good banker should commence his or her career by completing the qualifications of the Institute.
In 1976, following his death, his widow donated a sum of money to the Institute to establish a prize fund in memory of her late husband.
2010 Prizewinner – Margaret McClennan, Senior Analyst, Bank of America, Chester Margaret joined RBS on the Retail Risk Graduate programme in 2007. Whilst undertaking three separate placements, she studied for the Chartered Banker Qualification. On completion, Margaret worked as a Senior Analyst in Corporate and Commercial Risk as part of the financial reporting team producing portfolio risk information. She recently moved to Bank of America in Chester where she is part of the Strategy Governance team in Portfolio Risk.
Margaret believes that the Chartered Banker Qualification has given her a thorough grounding in banking and supported her career choices. “Being able to choose from a variety of modules to complement your current role, as well as modules about the wider role of banks in society, is a great foundation to a career in banking.”
Hutton Prize for Professional Ethics The Hutton Prize is a gold medal awarded to the individual achieving the highest mark in the examination for Professionalism and Ethics and donated by William L Hutton, an Honorary Fellow of the Institute.
William completed the Institute examinations in 1957 and then left banking in 1964 to work in the Pharmaceutical Industry in Africa. In 1976, he set up his own business consultancy, based in Kenya, but practising in various parts of the world. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner of the US Association of Certified Fraud Examiners
2010 Prizewinner – Alexander Dugay, Manager, Corporate Banking, National Australia Bank, London After studying Accounting and Finance at the University of Warwick, Alex joined Clydesdale Bank in 2008 on the iFS graduate scheme.
Working initially in the Corporate & Structured Finance (CSF) team in London, he is now a Manager within Corporate Banking. He is honoured to be recognised by the Institute: “The Chartered Banker qualification is an excellent way for bankers to demonstrate professionalism in their work, and for stakeholders to recognise those bankers with a commitment to honesty, integrity and knowledge.”
His employer, David Thorburn, Executive Director, Clydesdale Bank, praised Alex’s hard work and professionalism: “We place huge importance on ethics and professionalism and Alex's prize is great recognition for his effort.”
MSc in Professional Banking This year has seen Napier University of Edinburgh award its first two Masters degrees in Professional Banking. Mark Devlin, Local Director of Community Banking for Bank of Scotland was one of the qualification’s first recipients and he describes his pioneering experience:
“The Masters programme was excellent. The greatest challenge for me was the sheer volume of work in light of the fact that we all have busy jobs and families too. The course content was interesting on a personal and professional level. I chose to study Marketing and also Risk, both topics very high on banks’ agendas at this time. The work is tough and takes a lot of time, but once you achieve it, no words can describe how it makes you feel.”
Sarah Curle, Relationship Manager Specialist Banking, Large Corporate at Bank of Scotland was also awarded her Masters in Professional Banking. Sarah chose to study Marketing and Risk as part of her course: “As I already held my MCIBS, I was on the accelerated route which enabled me to complete the course by working towards two modules and my thesis at the end of the academic year, which was September. My thesis was carried out on mergers and acquisitions between banks, which I found quite topical.
The material for the course and the support available was superb. It is hard work as you have to manage study around your own time and full-time job, but I definitely feel that it’s worth it.
With customers focusing more and more on the quality of their banks, courses like this really show that the industry is taking their feedback seriously."
