The Sir Bruce Pattullo Prize: MORVEN LEIPER
The winner of the Sir Bruce Pattullo prize, Morven Leiper, joined RBS in 2008 on the Retail Business Leadership Graduate scheme. “I studied for the Chartered Banker qualification whilst undertaking graduate scheme placements in the RBS Scotland branch network, and the Branch Banking MD Office,” she says.
“I now have a position within the Branch Banking MD Office. I’m delighted to have won the Sir Bruce Pattullo prize and feel that the Chartered Banker qualification has helped me to gain a solid foundation in a range of banking subject areas.”
The Sir Bruce Pattullo Prize is awarded to the candidate scoring the highest total mark in the Chartered Banker examinations. This prize was established through a generous donation given by Sir Bruce Pattullo CBE, former Governor and Group Chief Executive, Bank of Scotland. In 1998, the Institute recognised the significant contribution that Sir Bruce has made to the work of the Institute by conferring on him the first Honorary Life Membership. Winner of the Hutton Prize for Professional Ethics: ELEANOR CARRICK
This year’s Hutton Prize winner, Eleanor Carrick, is Associate Director within RBS Edinburgh’s Corporate Office. She has worked with the bank since 2007. She says: “When I joined RBS, I studied for and completed the Advanced Diploma in Business and Corporate Banking. The skills and knowledge I gained confirmed my understanding of the importance of the Chartered Banker qualification.
“Especially in the current climate, I believe the qualification not only enhances the personal skills and abilities required to perform a successful role within the banking profession but is vital in helping to rebuild public confidence in banks and bankers.
“I am particularly proud to have been awarded this achievement relating to the subject of Professionalism and Ethics, a discipline which the Institute rightly ensures is embedded in all members.”
The Hutton Prize is a gold medal, awarded to the individual achieving the highest mark in the examination for Professionalism and Ethics. The prize was kindly donated by William L Hutton, an Honorary Fellow of the Institute.
Torrance McGuffie Memorial prize: JOHN FLAHERTY
John Flaherty is this year’s Torrance McGuffie Memorial prize-winner. He is currently a London-based Senior Auditor with RBS Group Internal Audit, covering the investment banking business in the UK, Spain, Italy and Russia.
“It is through the work of professional bodies, rigorous examinations and recognised qualifications that financial institutions can win back the trust of the public and build confidence in the banking system again,” he states.
The individual with the second highest total mark in the Chartered Banker examinations is awarded the Torrance McGuffie Memorial Prize.
Torrance McGuffie was a Branch Manager in Ayrshire with Bank of Scotland, believing any good banker should complete the qualifications of the Institute. In 1976, his widow established the prize in memory of her late husband.
