Note your CPD activity
We would like to remind members that you should be recording your CPD for 2011 in line with the requirements of the scheme. Further details can be found on our website at www.charteredbanker.com/Home/CPD/. A range of online CPD material is available in the members’ section of the website which can be used to supplement any development activity you are already undertaking through your employer. These resources may be particularly useful to help meet the Professionalism and Ethics requirement of the scheme.
CPD certificate renewals
Please note that we are bringing CPD certificate renewals in line with the CPD monitoring process. This means that although current CPD certificates are due for renewal at the end of this year, the new certificates will not be issued until the start of April, once the monitoring process is completed. In the interim, if you require confirmation of your CPD status (Chartered Banker or PMA), please remember that the online CPD registers are available on our website.
Subscription Reminders
Members who have still to pay their annual subscriptions for the 2011/2012 subscription year are requested to forward payment as soon as possible. Payment can be made via the members’ section of the website at www.charteredbanker.com

Institute granted FSA “Accredited Body” status
The Chartered Banker Institute has been granted Accredited Body status by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
The Institute is one among a number of bodies which have been awarded this status. The Institute will have responsibility for verifying the application of and issuing a Statement of Professional Standing (SPS) to all UK-based financial and investment advisers, who, from January 2013, must hold an SPS to show that they meet the minimum qualification requirements of the FSA’s Retail Distribution Review (RDR).
The role of Accredited Body completes the range of RDR-related services which the Institute offers, which now includes a workbased assessment for existing advisers offered in conjunction with training partners CTP and the NSAFS, and a universal gap fill programme for advisers struggling to identify and address their qualification gap fill.
Edward Bowen
The death has been announced of the oldest member of the Institute, Mr Edward Bowen. Mr Bowen passed away on 29 August, aged 103.
Originally completing his Institute examinations in 1927, he was a member of the Institute for over 80 years and was awarded Honorary Fellowship on the occasion of his 100th birthday in 2008.
Mr Bowen spent his entire career with the Bank of Scotland. Speaking when he received his Honorary Fellowship, Mr Bowen recalled the period he spent training Bank of Scotland managers as the highlight of his career.
It could be said that Mr Bowen witnessed a complete cycle in the banking profession. The beginning of his career coincided with the harsh recession of the late 1920s and early 1930s – a situation mirrored in the economic times of today.

Networking with confidence
Wednesday 30 November, Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh
In today’s business world, networking is seen as a vital skill. It can help you win work, gain and retain clients, grow your business and generally raise your profile. It’s a valuable talent that can benefit you personally and professionally. We all know it matters, but do we really understand what’s involved – and how to network well?
Networking with Confidence will provide interactive networking input, helping you understand why your networking isn’t always as effective as it could be and identify what’s getting in the way of your networking goals.
The session will teach you new skills and give you the chance to put them into practice by networking with other delegates then and there. After a summary of top tips from our speaker, Fraser Murray, of ‘Rock the Boat Consulting’, there will be time to continue networking over a glass of wine.
Networking with Confidence follows the success of our first pan-professional networking event back in February, which 200 delegates registered to attend. There are 14 professional bodies involved, representing, among others, solicitors, bankers, surveyors and accountants. Further information is available from the Institute website at www.charteredbanker.com
Schedule: 6pm - 8.30pm
Tickets: £17.50 inc. VAT to include tea/ coffee on arrival and a networking drinks reception.
