How individual bankers conduct themselves in their professional lives, and the culture of the organisations for which they work is of critical importance to the ongoing work to improve confidence and trust in the sector.  Since 1875, our Institute has helped banks and bankers in the UK and around the world develop, demonstrate and embed professional ethics, expertise, conduct and a professional culture that customers and communities - and bankers themselves can be proud of.

We do this through professional standards, professional membership and our professional code of conduct, which help indviduals address not only the letter, but the spirit of the applicable legislation and rules.

Raising Standards

Since the global financial crisis of 2008, a number of steps have been taken by governments and regulators to create increased financial stability and improve conduct in the financial services sector. Our work as a professional body for bankers complements and supports this work.

It is our view that there are only 3 ways to demonstrate professionalism – via professional body membership, a professional qualification or a professional standard – we cover all.

We have developed pathways to help bankers at all stages of their career move from achievement of a professional standard to attainment of a professional qualifications , supporting them to sustain and enhance their levels of knowledge and competence as they continue their professional development through a codified membership.

For information about the regimes in place to deliver increased individual accountability, such as the Senior Managers and Certification Regime [SMCR] please visit our Knowledge Hub.

Implementing cultural change has been challenging for many organisations. We offer banks and bankers support in achieving and sustaining the highest levels of banking professionalism, and in doing so help them meet the expectations placed on them under the new individual accountability regime.
