This year’s Annual Banking Conference will be held virtually on 21st, 22nd and 23rd September 2021 (each day’s session to run from 8am -9.30 am BST). 

The overarching theme for this year’s conference will be “responsible banking and the implementation of international standards”. It will consider among other things, how well banks are embedding the UN Principles for Responsible Banking in their organisations, how responsible banking links to the Chartered Banker Institute’s Professional Code of Conduct, and what responsible banking means for the education, training and development of bankers.

Mikael Sorensen was appointed CEO of Handelsbanken UK in September 2016.

Handelsbanken is a local relationship bank built on sustainable values. It offers individual and corporate banking with high levels of customer service via its UK-wide network of empowered local branches. Handelsbanken is a values-led organisation, believing in financial prudence, long-termism and in people’s will and ability to good things well. Today Handelsbanken is recognised as one of the strongest banks in the world.

Collectively, Mikael has over 34 years’ experience from the banking industry, and has spent the last 26 years’ at Handelsbanken.

Before joining the UK, Mikael worked in numerous roles and regions across the Handelsbanken Group, including Branch Manager and Regional Area Manager in Denmark, General Manager in Poland, and as CEO in the Netherlands from 2007 to 2016. Mikael has been a member of Handelsbanken’s Group Senior Management since 2013.

Mikael sits on the Council of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce, a not for profit organisation aimed at supporting entrepreneurs and businesses within the Swedish-British business community.

Mikael finished a Higher Financial Education within corporate banking, credit analysis and management, and completed Copenhagen University Law School.

UNEP FI | Interim Banking Team Lead

 

Puleng is the Interim Banking Team Lead at UNEP FI. She was involved in developing the Principles for Responsible Banking, and currently leads the team that works closely with Signatory Banks and various stakeholders to support and drive implementation of the Principles for Responsible Banking, focusing on impact and driving alignment of bank portfolios with sustainable development objectives.    

She started her career as a commercial law attorney. She left practice to work in the legal departments of Investec and then Standard Bank. She spent four years in Standard Bank's corporate and investment banking department, working on property development transactions. Thereafter, she moved to Standard Bank's Regulatory Advocacy team, where she worked with a broad range of stakeholders on policy issues, engaging with policy makers and regulators on emerging policies and legislation, including financial technology. 

Puleng has obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws, and Masters degree in Public Policy from Wits University. She is passionate about sustainable development, and working towards achieving the objectives of the SDGs in order to realise an equitable and sustainable future for all.

Oliver is currently Director of Strategy and Ventures and holds responsibility for Group Strategy, Sustainability, Economics, Ventures, and Corporate Development. He was appointed an attendee of Group ExCo in November 2019.

Oliver joined RBS in September 2018 from UK Financial Investments (UKFI) where he was latterly CEO, with responsibility for managing the government’s shareholdings in RBS, Lloyds Banking Group, and UK Asset Resolution.

Before joining UKFI Oliver worked at Bank of America Merrill Lynch for nearly 14 years, where he undertook various roles including head of equity syndicate for Europe and head of UK equity capital markets origination.

Oliver holds a BA, Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford

Simon leads the Institute’s thought leadership on green and sustainable banking.  He has been Chief Executive of the Institute since 2007, and for more than a decade has led our work on enhancing and sustaining customer-focused, ethical professionalism and responsible banking.  In 2011, Simon led the establishment of the Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board (CB:PSB).

Simon led the development of the world’s first benchmark qualification for green finance, the Green Finance Certificate, launched in 2018, and is editor of Principles and Practice of Green Finance that underpins the course programme.  He has contributed two new chapters to the 2019 update, on Fintech in Green Finance and the Role of the Green Finance Professional.  In 2018, Simon represented the Institute at the UN Climate Change Summit (COP24) in Katowice, Poland.

Giles leads the Institute’s thought-leadership on ethical banking, particularly around the area of digital ethics.  He has around 20 years' experience in the arena of professional education and professional standards. He has led a very wide range of education and professionalism projects to significantly diversify the work of the Chartered Banker Institute, developing major strategic programmes to diverse areas of the banking industry around the globe. In particular, he has specialised in developing a wide range of bespoke professionalisation programmes for banks, coupled with highly innovative accreditation services. These projects have reached many tens of thousands of banking professionals.

Giles holds a degree in law, a Masters in education, and has recently finished studying a Masters in applied professional ethics.

Arnaud Cohen Stuart is Head of Business Ethics, at ING where he guides stakeholder engagement and reputation management associated with a broad range of banking transactions. As such, he contributed to the development of multi-stakeholder Responsible Business Conduct agreements, represented ING in OECD mediation processes, and managed ING’s response to public concern expressed over the financing of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Representing the Dutch Banking Association, Arnaud is a member of the Responsible Business Conduct Committee at the Dutch Social and Economic Council advising the Dutch government and Parliament on RBC policy.

Arnaud is a guest lecturer at VU University Amsterdam (Institutional Identity) and Utrecht University (Economic Ethics). He holds master’s degrees in Law and in Applied Ethics.

Benny is responsible for all aspects of Cathay United Bank’s (“CUB”) Overseas Management Department (“OMD”) and South East Asia Region. Prior to CUB, Benny held senior positions at Citigroup Corporate and Investment Bank (based in New York, Australia, and Hong Kong), APG Asset Management, Asia (Dutch Pension Fund), China-ASEAN Fund (Infrastructure Private Equity Fund).

Benny holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Finance from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Pennsylvania State University. Benny is also a CFA charterholder

Joanne Murphy is the Institute's Chief Operating Officer delivering the Institute’s business wide digital transformation strategy and leading the strategic and annual business planning process.  Joanne’s remit includes driving our professional inclusion agenda and she has executive responsibility across a variety of business function including; Membership, Business Support, Finance, People, Innovation and Marketing.

In November 2014, following a period of significant growth at the Institute, Joanne became our first Operations Director and also the first female member of the leadership team, she led the organisational restructure which established the Operations function. With colleagues, Joanne ensures the needs of our members, clients and educational partners are identified and supported effectively by the Institute's resources.

Joanne joined the Institute to support the establishment of the Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board (CB:PSB). Joanne led the professional standards implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and devised the supporting operational infrastructure. Joanne oversaw the implementation of the CB:PSB Foundation Standard for Professional Bankers and its subsequent adoption by over 185,000 bankers globally.

Joanne has over 25 years' experience in financial services, working in a variety of roles in business and retail banking with RBS from 2002, and prior to that with GE Capital. Joanne’s career began working in marketing and research at Scottish Television in London. Joanne is a qualified learning professional with expertise in six sigma methodology, in consulting and project capacity her activities include outsourcing, international relocation and process improvement.

Joanne, is a member of both the Institute and of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and holds an MBA in Banking and Finance.

Johanna is a Sustainability Expert and the PRB Implementation Support Manager at UNEP FI. In her role, she helps banks implement requirements of the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), such as target setting in the identified areas of most significant impact, and meet their commitments as signatories. Prior to joining UNEP FI, she was a CSR manager at a cooperative bank, and has several years of experience in sustainability management in both banking and insurance.

Johanna studied Economic Geography at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich/Germany and Lund University/Sweden, and holds a PhD in Sustainable Finance.

Antoni Ballabriga is Global Head of Responsible Business at BBVA. He reports directly to the Board of Directors. His mission is to ensure that people are systematically placed at the decision-making processes.

Co-chair of the Global Steering Committee at UNEP FI (United Nations Environmental Program for Financial Institutions) and European banks’ representative.

Chair of the Sustainable Finance Expert Group at EBF (European Banking Federation).

Moreover, he is professor at ESADE Business School. Former President of DIRSE, Spanish Association of CSR Professionals and Former President of SpainSIF, Spanish Forum for Socially Responsible Investment. Antoni holds a Degree in Business Sciences and MBA from ESADE Business School. He has studied at Harvard Business School and is First Mover Fellow at The Aspen Institute.

A trained accountant, Mr. Hassan Usman graduated with a first-class degree in Accounting in 1985 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; An Associate Member of ICAN in 1989 and became a fellow in 2002; He obtained PGDM in 1995 from Maastricht School of Management and attended Oxford University Advanced Management Programme in 2002; Member of FRCN in 2013; Bridge to Masters of Arts (PGD) in Islamic Studies from International Online University 2018; Fellow of CIBN in 2019; Member of Institute of Directors.

He worked as Financial Controller of Nigerian Development Company Limited, Kaduna until he joined NAL Merchant Bank Plc. and served as the Financial Controller and Treasurer respectively between1996-2001. Mr. Hassan served as GM, Banking Services before re-joining NAL Bank as DGM and Head, Business and Financial Advisory Group.

Mr. Usman joined Jaiz International in 2005 as a pioneer staff and was a key member leading to the licensing of Jaiz Bank Plc., in 2011. He served as GM- Business Development from January 2012-April 2013 and was ED Operations and Information Technology prior to his appointment as the Managing Director/CEO in June 2016. He is the President of the NIFIAN (Non-Interest Financial Institutions Association of Nigeria).

CIMB Islamic Bank | Malaysia | Regional Head | Commercial & Transaction Banking

 

Hussam Sultan is an experienced international Islamic banking and finance professional whose interests include product development, commercial banking, international trade, poverty alleviation, Fintech and environmental sustainability. He is currently working as Head, Commercial and Transaction Banking at CIMB Islamic Bank in Malaysia. Before joining CIMB Islamic Hussam worked most recently as Head, Commercial Banking at HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad and prior to that he worked for the Dubai based investment firm Fajr Capital on various roles and selected strategic projects which saw him seconded to Brunei Darussalam to lead the product transformation at Brunei’s leading Islamic bank, BIBD. He also held positions at HSBC Amanah in both the UK and Dubai offices, working in business development, product development, structuring and compliance. He played a pivotal role in growing the HSBC Amanah business in the UK and was involved in the launch of innovative Islamic retail and corporate banking products at BIBD. Hussam has a BEng (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering from University College London (UCL), UK, and an MSc in Environmental Management for Business from Cranfield University, UK, with research focus on Sustainable Banking.

Jennifer develops strategic qualification and accreditation solutions, both in the UK and overseas, to support professional development in banks and financial services organisations.

Having worked in banking for over 20 years prior to joining us in 2009, Jennifer takes a very hands-on and practical approach to her role, viewing situations from a customer, employee and employer perspective, to deliver the best possible outcomes for all. Responsible for the recent development of tailored routes to qualifications across a variety banks, often involving the accreditation of internal bank learning programmes, increasing professionalism in banking is core to all her activities.

Having been a Chartered Banker for many years, and more recently awarded a Fellowship, she is proud to have been one of the very first to attain the Chartered Banker MBA qualification.

Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys spending as much time as possible with her family and dogs.

Dr. Hank Huang

Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance | President

 

Dr. Huang received his PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from National Taipei University in 2001. He led the BOT Research Center at the Taiwan Economic Research Institute (TIER) from 2003 to 2008, serving as project leader for several projects. He designed a nationwide procurement mechanism for private participation in wastewater treatment systems, created cash flow management methods for local governments, and also designed a development approach for regional target industries.

Later, he was appointed Director of the Finance Department of the Yilan County Government, located in the Northeast of Taiwan. Yilan faced a serious deficit at the time, in 2011. Dr. Huang reversed the decay in public finances and achieved the first surplus in two decades.   

Dr. Huang joined the Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (TABF) as Vice President in 2016, and subsequently became President in 2017, not only creating new revenue sources, but also shaping new thinking at the forty-year old institution.  He introduced courses on FinTech, Leadership, and Risk Management, enlarged the scope of online training, and improved the certification process. His ambition is to internationalize the organization in line with the growing needs of the Taiwanese financial services sector.

Chris was appointed FINSIA CEO in September 2016. He has been associated with the Australasian financial services industry for nearly 30 years. Previously, he was CEO of CUA, Australia’s largest customer-owned financial institution, Regional Director, Bank of Scotland and CEO, BankWest Retail Bank.

He has extensive experience as a non- executive director including in the payments, wealth management and insurance sectors. He is also a Chartered Banker.

Commencing his career in IT, Chris maintains a keen interest in the ongoing impact of technology on financial services.

In addition to Datuk Nora Manaf’s role as the Group Chief Human Capital Officer and member of the Group EXCO of Maybank, Datuk Nora chairs several national-level committees and holds several Board memberships. Datuk Nora’s Board memberships include the Board of Etiqa General Insurance Berhad and MBB Labs Private Limited, Bangalore. Datuk Nora is actively engaged in the country’s Financial Institutions, Employers’ and Education circles via the leadership roles she holds.

In 2018, Datuk Nora was appointed to the Malaysian Human Resource Minister’s Advisory Group. She is also President of the Malayan Commercial Banks’ Association (MCBA), Chairman of the Banking Sector HR Networking Group (HRNG), Council Member of Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), a member of the National Labour Advisory Committee (NLAC), a council member of Industry Advisory Council (IAC) of Department of Polytechnic & Community College Education (DPCCE), and an Advisory Council Member of Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera as well as for the University-Industry Advisory Council Universiti Utara Malaysia.

Datuk Nora was recognised as a Global Top 50 Human Resource Professional and was appointed into Talent Compact 4.0, an Industry Talent Advisory Panel of Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad. Datuk Nora is also a Member of the Board of Examiners for the Asia Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB), Member of the Asia Pacific Industry Advisory Panel for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and a Qualified Person for Training (QPRT) for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). In 2020, Datuk Nora was appointed as an Adjunct Professor by Pusat Citra Universiti of the National University of Malaysia. She is also an Adjunct Professor appointed by the College of Business, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) since 2015. In July 2019, Datuk Nora was also appointed into the Board of Advisors for UUM’s undergraduate programme for Bachelor of Applied Linguistics and Business Administration with Honours. Datuk Nora is active in her quest to make a difference to empower women. She is the Executive Sponsor for Maybank’s Women Mentor Women Council established in 2013, as well as a Mentor for the ICAEW-TalentCorp Women in Leadership Programme. In 2016, Datuk Nora was awarded the “Beacon of Light” award at the National Women in Leadership Summit organised by the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

Datuk Nora also spoke at the Women in Leadership seminar at Oxford University in 2016. The Singapore Management University (SMU) published a Case Study, titled “Maybank: Organisational Transformation through Human Resources” in collaboration with Datuk Nora in 2019. On 31 March 2021, Datuk Nora was conferred the Top 50 Impact Lifetime Achievement Awards for Women Excellence by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific. Datuk Nora is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is registered with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). Datuk Nora also holds a post-grad certification in Human Resource Development from Cornell University and is a certified Gallup Strengths finder Coach Level II. She is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School. In February 2020, Datuk Nora was conferred the Chartered Banker (CB) by the Chartered Banker Institute (CBI) headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Hong Kong Institute of Bankers | General Manager

 

Mr Philip Kam was appointed General Manager for Institute Development of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) in October 2018.  He leads the marketing, events/initiatives, finance, operations, IT and admin functions of the HKIB in promoting talent development in the banking industry in HK and the greater China region.

Prior to joining the HKIB, he served as Managing Director, Chief Operating Officer for HSBC Global Banking ASP from August 2002 to September 2017. He was responsible for helping the business manage its risk and governance over 18 countries across Asia Pacific. At HSBC, Mr Kam had also been supporting the Capital Markets and Global Markets (primary and secondary markets) product lines, within the Global Banking and Markets business.  He was designated a Climate Champion and Sustainability Leader for HSBC.

With over 25 years in corporate and investment banking, in North America and Asia, Mr Kam brings a wealth of business management experience and product knowledge to the table.

Mr Kam holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Accountant (Hons) from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
