This year’s Annual Banking Conference will be held virtually on 21st, 22nd and 23rd September 2021 (each day’s session to run from 8am -9.30 am BST). 

Join us for the second webinar of the series where our expert panel will discuss "How are the UN Principles for Responsible Banking being implemented by banks?"

During the session the panel will discuss:

  • What initiatives are banks, in different regions, implementing to align with themselves UN PRB’s both externally (with customers) and internally (in terms of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) training of their staff, for instance) to raise their colleagues’ capability?

  • What initiatives are working, the lessons learnt and the challenges faced, and how have those challenges been overcome by banks?

  • What more could be done to raise awareness of the Principles and their implications beyond specialist teams in banks?

Oliver Holbourn

NatWest Group | Director of Strategy and Ventures


Oliver is currently Director of Strategy and Ventures and holds responsibility for Group Strategy, Sustainability, Economics, Ventures, and Corporate Development. He was appointed an attendee of Group ExCo in November 2019.

Oliver joined RBS in September 2018 from UK Financial Investments (UKFI) where he was latterly CEO, with responsibility for managing the government’s shareholdings in RBS, Lloyds Banking Group, and UK Asset Resolution.

Before joining UKFI Oliver worked at Bank of America Merrill Lynch for nearly 14 years, where he undertook various roles including head of equity syndicate for Europe and head of UK equity capital markets origination.

Joanne Murphy

Joanne Murphy is the Institute's Chief Operating Officer delivering the Institute’s business wide digital transformation strategy and leading the strategic and annual business planning process.  Joanne’s remit includes driving our professional inclusion agenda and she has executive responsibility across a variety of business function including; Membership, Business Support, Finance, People, Innovation and Marketing.

In November 2014, following a period of significant growth at the Institute, Joanne became our first Operations Director and also the first female member of the leadership team, she led the organisational restructure which established the Operations function. With colleagues, Joanne ensures the needs of our members, clients and educational partners are identified and supported effectively by the Institute's resources.

Joanne joined the Institute to support the establishment of the Chartered Banker Professional Standards Board (CB:PSB). Joanne led the professional standards implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and devised the supporting operational infrastructure. Joanne oversaw the implementation of the CB:PSB Foundation Standard for Professional Bankers and its subsequent adoption by over 185,000 bankers globally.

Joanne has over 25 years' experience in financial services, working in a variety of roles in business and retail banking with RBS from 2002, and prior to that with GE Capital. Joanne’s career began working in marketing and research at Scottish Television in London. Joanne is a qualified learning professional with expertise in six sigma methodology, in consulting and project capacity her activities include outsourcing, international relocation and process improvement.

Joanne, is a member of both the Institute and of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and holds an MBA in Banking and Finance.

UNEP FI | PRB Implementation Support Manager


Johanna is a Sustainability Expert and the PRB Implementation Support Manager at UNEP FI. In her role, she helps banks implement requirements of the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), such as target setting in the identified areas of most significant impact, and meet their commitments as signatories. Prior to joining UNEP FI, she was a CSR manager at a cooperative bank, and has several years of experience in sustainability management in both banking and insurance.

Johanna studied Economic Geography at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich/Germany and Lund University/Sweden, and holds a PhD in Sustainable Finance.

Antoni Ballabriga

BBVA | Global Head of Responsible Business


Antoni Ballabriga is Global Head of Responsible Business at BBVA. He reports directly to the Board of Directors. His mission is to ensure that people are systematically placed at the decision-making processes.

Co-chair of the Global Steering Committee at UNEP FI (United Nations Environmental Program for Financial Institutions) and European banks’ representative.

Chair of the Sustainable Finance Expert Group at EBF (European Banking Federation).

Moreover, he is professor at ESADE Business School. Former President of DIRSE, Spanish Association of CSR Professionals and Former President of SpainSIF, Spanish Forum for Socially Responsible Investment. Antoni holds a Degree in Business Sciences and MBA from ESADE Business School. He has studied at Harvard Business School and is First Mover Fellow at The Aspen Institute.

A trained accountant, Mr. Hassan Usman graduated with a first-class degree in Accounting in 1985 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; An Associate Member of ICAN in 1989 and became a fellow in 2002; He obtained PGDM in 1995 from Maastricht School of Management and attended Oxford University Advanced Management Programme in 2002; Member of FRCN in 2013; Bridge to Masters of Arts (PGD) in Islamic Studies from International Online University 2018; Fellow of CIBN in 2019; Member of Institute of Directors.

He worked as Financial Controller of Nigerian Development Company Limited, Kaduna until he joined NAL Merchant Bank Plc. and served as the Financial Controller and Treasurer respectively between1996-2001. Mr. Hassan served as GM, Banking Services before re-joining NAL Bank as DGM and Head, Business and Financial Advisory Group.

Mr. Usman joined Jaiz International in 2005 as a pioneer staff and was a key member leading to the licensing of Jaiz Bank Plc., in 2011. He served as GM- Business Development from January 2012-April 2013 and was ED Operations and Information Technology prior to his appointment as the Managing Director/CEO in June 2016. He is the President of the NIFIAN (Non-Interest Financial Institutions Association of Nigeria).

CIMB Islamic Bank | Malaysia | Regional Head | Commercial & Transaction Banking


Hussam Sultan is an experienced international Islamic banking and finance professional whose interests include product development, commercial banking, international trade, poverty alleviation, Fintech and environmental sustainability. He is currently working as Head, Commercial and Transaction Banking at CIMB Islamic Bank in Malaysia. Before joining CIMB Islamic Hussam worked most recently as Head, Commercial Banking at HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad and prior to that he worked for the Dubai based investment firm Fajr Capital on various roles and selected strategic projects which saw him seconded to Brunei Darussalam to lead the product transformation at Brunei’s leading Islamic bank, BIBD. He also held positions at HSBC Amanah in both the UK and Dubai offices, working in business development, product development, structuring and compliance. He played a pivotal role in growing the HSBC Amanah business in the UK and was involved in the launch of innovative Islamic retail and corporate banking products at BIBD. Hussam has a BEng (Hons) in Civil and Structural Engineering from University College London (UCL), UK, and an MSc in Environmental Management for Business from Cranfield University, UK, with research focus on Sustainable Banking.
