The Chartered Banker Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Tanya Retter FCBI as its new Chief Executive Officer.
The appointment was announced on 26 June 2025 at the Institute’s 150th AGM. The Institute’s Board of Trustees Chair and current Institute President, Paul Denton said:
Tanya brings over two decades of experience in financial services, including senior roles at NatWest and RBS, where she led learning and capability teams for key
initiatives in leadership development, digital transformation and customer and employee experience. Having progressed through the Institute’s ranks as a student, member, client, Fellow and senior leader, she has a deep, personal connection to the Institute’s purpose. Her unique blend of practitioner insight and strategic foresight positions her to strengthen the Institute’s role as a trusted voice in banking and a champion for values-led, responsible and sustainable finance.
Since joining the Institute in 2023 as Executive Director of Education, Tanya has played a pivotal role in reshaping its global education strategy. Her knowledge from working closely with professional bodies throughout her banking career combined with her role within the Institute means she understands first-hand the importance of ensuring that qualifications and professional development programmes meet the evolving needs of the Institute’s members, the banks they work for and the customers and communities they serve.
On her appointment as CEO, the first female CEO in the Institute’s long history, Tanya commented:
As the Institute starts a historic new chapter, Tanya will lead its continued efforts to raise professional standards across the banking sector, ensuring that education, ethics, and lifelong learning remain at the heart of a responsible and future-ready profession.
Note: The Board also announced its gratitude to the working group that provided support and insight to the recruitment process. In particular, the Board conveyed its sincere thanks to Billy MacLeod for his positive contribution throughout the CEO recruitment process, and for his continued dedication to the Institute as in his role as Transformation Director and Trustee.
