 The Certificate in Professional and Ethical Banking is designed to enhance the learner's understanding of professionalism and ethics and the implications of professionalism and ethics for banking today. Learners develop their skills in thinking critically about how ethical behaviour can be encouraged in banking; whether through codes of ethics, regulation, or good leadership, and explore how ethical demands might change with future developments, such as digital innovations and growing environmental pressures.

  • Level: SCQF Level 9 (EQF Level 5/6 equivalent).
  • Duration: Approximately 200 learning hours, which can be completed at your own pace within the 12-month enrolment period.  
  • Credits: 20 credits.
  • Eligibility: Open to all financial services professionals globally. No prior qualifications or work experience required.

On completion, learners become Certificated Members of the Institute and will receive a digital certificate usually within 5 working days.

  • Assessment: The Professional and Ethical Banking module is assessed by a single exam sat within a 24-hour time period. The exam enables the learner to demonstrate their achievement of the module learning outcomes. Formative assessment is provided in the form of online objective testing at the end of each unit. 
  • Certification: Digital certificate awarded within 5 working days of passing. 
  • Membership Requirement: £75 annual subscription for student membership during your studies.  
  • Registration Validity: 12 months to fully complete the qualification, including sitting and passing the final exam.

Unit 2 examines a range of theories and approaches to ethical thinking, and the extent to which these could help resolve ethical dilemmas and ethical arguments.

Unit 3 considers the impact on banks, their customers, and their employees, of a range of legislation and regulation on current banking practice, and the extent to which it is designed to rebuild trust and confidence in banks. 

  • Unit 4: Business Ethics  

Unit 4 explores several views on the responsibilities of a business, and key ethical issues and challenges facing the banking sector. 

  • Unit 5: Leadership, Governance, Culture and Conduct  

Unit 5 examines a range of theories relating to the ethics of leadership and corporate governance in banking. 

  • Unit 6: The Future of Banking: Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability  

Unit 6 evaluates, from an ethical perspective, the impact, and potential impact, of environmental factors and technological developments on current and future banking practice.
