Overview

The Chartered Banker Diploma is an advanced professional qualification and the Institute’s gold-standard credential for banking professionals. It builds on the foundation of the Associate Chartered Banker Diploma, developing more advanced technical knowledge, professional judgement, and expertise in strategy, risk, ethics, and responsible banking. 

Designed to equip current and future banking professionals with leadership skills, the Diploma enhances strategic and technical capability in a rapidly evolving financial services environment shaped by regulation, technology, and customer expectations. Learners gain the skills to manage complex risk environments, make informed professional decisions, and embed ethical and sustainable banking practices across their organisation. 

  • After completing the Chartered Banker Diploma, learners become qualified Members of the Institute. As such, they will be entitled to use the professional designation Chartered Banker and the designatory letters MCBI after their name.   

Key Skills Developed: Through the Chartered Banker Diploma, learners develop advanced professional and leadership skills, including:

Key Details:

  • Duration: Can be completed in as little as 12 months or spread over up to 6 years. 
  • Level: SCQF Level 10 (broadly EQF Level 6 equivalent).  
  • Credits: 60 credits 
  • Cost: To achieve the diploma, learners must complete three certificates.

Certificate in Leadership, Strategy and Risk: £1295 

Certificate in Bank Risk Management: £1295 

Certificate in Professionalism and Ethics: £1295 

Total cost: £3,585


Important: The Certificate in Leadership, Strategy and Risk must be completed before undertaking the Certificate in Bank Risk Management 

Key facts
  • ​​​​​​Assessment:  Leadership, Strategy and Risk is assessed through a single exam, to be completed within a 24-hour period; Professionalism and Ethics and Bank Risk Management are both assessed through the submission of a 6,000-word assignment. 
  • Certification: Digital certificate awarded via email within five working days of completion.  

  • Membership Requirement: £75 annual subscription to the Institute.  

  • Registration Validity: 12 months per module, including sitting and passing the final exam. 

  • Examination resit: £120 per qualification.

Note: Professionalism and Ethics, and Bank Risk Management will be replaced with Professional and Ethical Banking, and Risk Management in Banking in 2026.

Am I Eligible?

You must hold the Associate Chartered Banker Diploma to undertake the Chartered Banker Diploma. 

The Associate Chartered Banker Diploma provides the essential foundation of core banking knowledge and professional competence. The Chartered Banker Diploma builds on this foundation through more advanced and technical professional study, preparing banking professionals for greater responsibility and career progression.
