About the World Conference of Banking Institutes

Since 1975, banking institutes and leaders from around the world have gathered biennially at the World Conference of Banking Institutes (WCBI) to share insight, strengthen collaboration, and advance global standards of professionalism. Over five decades, WCBI has become a flagship event of the Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB) and a trusted international forum bringing together central bankers, commercial bankers, regulators, academics, learning and development specialists, and banking and finance education providers.

Hosted across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, the conference offers a respected platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and strategic dialogue on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of banking. The most recent conference, held in 2023 in Malaysia and hosted by the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers, formally passed hosting responsibilities to the Chartered Banker Institute as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.

In 2026, the Chartered Banker Institute will host the 25th WCBI in collaboration with the University of St Andrews Business School Executive Education. This milestone event brings together global perspectives to explore innovation, professional standards, and the values that underpin trust and leadership in banking.

“Where tradition met transformation”

Hosted by the Chartered Banker Institute and the University of St Andrews Business School Executive Education

The 25th World Conference of Banking Institutes (WCBI) took place in Scotland, bringing together banking leaders, educators, and regulators from around the world to explore how technology, trust, and professional standards are shaping the future of banking.

Set in historic St Andrews, the conference provided a forum to examine the forces transforming the profession, from artificial intelligence and technological advancement to evolving expectations around ethics, responsibility, and public confidence and the implications for professional education and standards.

Against a backdrop of rapid change across the sector, discussions focused on how best to equip professionals with the skills, judgement, and capabilities needed for the future. The event also marked 150 years since the establishment of the first banking institute, celebrating a shared heritage while looking ahead to the continued evolution of standards, learning, and professional development.

Delegates shared insights, challenged perspectives, and contributed to a global conversation aimed at strengthening and advancing the profession.

We're pleased to share that this conference was a part of the Edinburgh Finance Festival: Click here to find out more.
