Mark Hoban and David Pitt receive Honorary Fellowships from the Chartered Banker Institute

Pay.UK’s Chair Mark Hoban and Chief Executive David Pitt have been awarded Honorary Fellowships by the Chartered Banker Institute in recognition of their outstanding contributions to professionalism and commitment to the highest standards of conduct across financial services.

The Chartered Banker Institute’s Chief Executive Tanya Retter presented the awards during a visit to Pay.UK’s offices in Whitechapel, London, where she joined Mark and David to mark the occasion.

Mark and David’s respective work reflects the importance of strong leadership, ethical stewardship and strong professional standards, in maintaining trusted financial infrastructure. Through their roles at Pay.UK, they have helped bolster and evolve the UK’s core interbank payment systems, ensuring they remain resilient, secure and capable of supporting the demands of a modern economy.

Mark Hoban

Mark Hoban’s career reflects a deep and sustained commitment to strengthening the banking profession, spanning public service, regulation and industry leadership. As Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 2010 to 2012, he played an important role in supporting the restoration of stability, confidence and stronger foundations across the UK’s financial system following the financial crisis.

Across his subsequent roles, including chairing the International Regulatory Strategy Group, he has continued to play a key role in shaping a robust and globally competitive regulatory environment, while consistently championing high standards of governance, professionalism and market integrity.

Alongside his role at Pay.UK, Mark chairs the Financial Services Skills Commission, where he brings together the financial services sector, government and education to address long-term capability needs. Through this work, he has advocated for the development of a more skilled and adaptable workforce, helping to ensure the profession is equipped to meet evolving demands and technological change.

Upon receiving the Honorary Fellowship, Mark Hoban said:

Trust in banking is underpinned by a commitment to the highest standards of conduct. Those standards give our customers confidence and promote a flourishing sector. I have been delighted to have played my role in promoting those standards through my work in government and, more recently, as Chair of both Pay.UK and the Financial Services Skills Commission. It is a real privilege to become an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute in this anniversary year.”

Presenting the award, Chartered Banker Institute Chief Executive Tanya Retter said:

David Pitt

David Pitt’s leadership is defined by his ability to deliver complex transformation in high-profile environments, underpinned by strong operational discipline, accountability and integrity. Across his career, he has led major organisational change programmes that improved performance while reinforcing governance and trust in critical services.

Prior to joining Pay.UK, David served as Chief Operating Officer of the UK Government’s Test, Trace and Containment programme, where he led the transformation of a public service during a period of significant national importance. He enhanced delivery while ensuring clear accountability and oversight in a demanding and mission-critical role.

In the private sector, David has held senior roles including Chief Operating Officer at esure and CEO of RSA’s Greater China business, combining commercial leadership with a strong focus on governance, risk management and professional standards. Throughout his career, David has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional excellence and delivering outcomes that strengthen confidence in essential systems and services.

Upon receiving the Honorary Fellowship, David Pitt said:

Professionalism, accountability and strong standards sit at the heart of trusted financial services, and this Fellowship reflects the collective efforts of the many colleagues and partners I’ve worked with across my career. At Pay.UK, that focus remains central to ensuring the UK’s payment systems continue to operate with resilience, integrity and confidence.”

As part of its 150th anniversary, the Chartered Banker Institute is awarding 150 Honorary Fellowships to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the profession and who embody the values central to its mission.
