Professor John Wilson awarded Honorary Fellowship
The Chartered Banker Institute is delighted to announce that Professor John Wilson has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute, recognising his outstanding contribution to advancing professional banking education and professionalism.
Professor Wilson is widely respected for his leadership in shaping both policy and practice across the financial services sector. As Head of the Department of Finance and Director of the Centre for Responsible Banking & Finance at The University of St. Andrews Business School, he has helped elevate academic understanding of banking, finance and regulation, while also fostering the next generation of responsible finance professionals not only in the UK but also through senior roles and visiting positions at the Helsinki School of Economics, University of Limoges and University College Dublin.
In addition to his academic leadership, Professor Wilson actively contributes to the design and delivery of executive education to bankers from around the world, ensuring that senior professionals benefit from cutting‑edge insight and internationally relevant good practice.
Professor Wilson’s influence extends beyond academia, bridging the gap between research, practice and public policy through his work with major financial institutions and public bodies, including HSBC MoneyUK, the Financial Conduct Authority, and both the Scottish and Irish Governments. Internationally his expertise has supported the South African Reserve Bank, the Italian Bankers Association, and the Irish League of Credit Unions, helping to shape decision-making across regulation, governance and the wider financial ecosystem.
This Honorary Fellowship celebrates not only Professor Wilson’s achievements, but the enduring impact of his work on strengthening professional standards, responsible banking and the quality of financial decision-making – values that sit at the heart of the Institute’s mission.
On receiving the Honorary Fellowship, Professor Wilson commented:
“ It is a privilege to receive this award and contribute to a profession whose work shapes the economy and wider society. Advancing responsible banking is not only an academic endeavour, it is a shared commitment to strengthening trust, improving decision‑making, and supporting a more resilient financial system.”
On presenting the award, the Chartered Banker Institute’s CEO, Tanya Retter said:
“We are delighted to welcome Professor Wilson as an Honorary Fellow, and we look forward to continue collaborating with him and his team at The University of St. Andrews Business School. His ongoing commitment to banking professionalism will play in shaping the future of responsible banking.”
Over the next three years, the Institute will confer 150 Honorary Fellowships on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the profession, embody the values at the heart of our mission, and will help champion the Institute’s vision as we enter our next chapter.
