The Chartered Banker Institute's Young Banker of the Year 2021 Competition is underway!

We will be hosting our live Final virtually again this year.

Our Young Banker applicants are presented with the following question: "What idea would you implement in your organisation  to improve outcomes for customers, colleagues,  and communities? Your idea should reflect your vision for the future of the industry and be consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”​

Lloyds Banking Group | Group Strategy


James joined Lloyds Banking Group in 2020 on their Finance Graduate Programme where he has undertaken various roles within Group Costs, Mortgage Intermediaries and Group Strategy. Since joining, James received the Audience Award in the Chartered Banker Institute’s Young Banker of the Year 2021 competition for his proposal of a Sustainable Savings Account. James has also been a keen advocate for sustainability and responsible banking having spoken in MoneyLIVE 2022 ‘Leaders of tomorrow’ panel discussion on ‘Envisioning the bank of the future’.

James graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2020 with a first-class degree in BSc (Hons) Economics and was awarded the ‘First Year Economics Undergraduate Prize’ and the ‘Final Year Economics Undergraduate Prize’. He is also currently studying the CIMA Professional Qualification.

Rosie Lyon

Allied Irish Bank (AIB) | Executive Assistant


Rosie is an Executive Assistant with AIB. Her banking career started in 2016 as a cashier and since then she has worked her way up to her current role gaining experience across areas as diverse as front-line cashier, AML, Customer relationship management, and more.

Rosie won Young Banker of the Year 2021 with her idea to provide a fairer financial future for sufferers and survivors of domestic abuse. Rosie has done a lot of work on this initiative and has already made good progress in implementing it in AIB. She’s aiming for others in the UK financial industry to adopt a similar approach.

Hampden & Co | Assistant Banking Manager


I am a very personable, motivated, and hardworking individual that is currently pursuing a career as a Banker with Hampden & Co. Born and raised in Scotland, I attended The Edinburgh Academy before studying Politics at The University of Edinburgh.

Since graduating, I have progressed through the Banking Operations and Credit Documentation Teams at Hampden & Co, before joining their Private Banking Office just over a year ago. I am incredibly passionate about my job, where my current role is to assist our Banking Director's manage their defined client portfolio's on a daily basis. 

Having recently won The Chartered Banker Institute’s Hutton Prize, completing my Associate Chartered Banker Diploma and becoming fully CeMAP qualified, my attention has turned briefly to perfecting my golf swing!

Much like everyone else, I am also unbelievably excited to spend more time with my family and friends, visit my favourite places in Italy and perhaps most importantly cheer on Tottenham Hotspur in their new stadium which I am yet to see!

TSB | Senior Manager


I am currently a Senior Manager at TSB, looking after Current Account Transformation, where I am delivering several large strategic projects. Prior to that I was responsible for TSB’s Overdraft business and was also the Executive Assistant to the Products and Digital Director. Before TSB I worked as a strategy consultant across on a wide range of industries and projects, both in the UK and abroad.

In my evenings and at weekends I am currently learning fullstack web development at Le Wagon Coding School in London. It has been a great way of filling my time over the last year and I hope to use the skills in my future career.

Outside of work I am a supporter of the Felix Project, which aims to tackle the food waste crisis in London. As a keen sportsman, I have completed several marathons and long-distance bike rides to raise money for them. I also like to get to a Tottenham game or take my dog, Louis, out for a walk.

What to expect on the day of the live final? 

The Final will see these 4 candidates present their ideas virtually, to our live audience and answer questions from both our panel of judges and the audience. 

The judges will then choose who to annouce as the 'Young Banker of the Year 2021'.
