Across the globe, there is an ever-growing focus on the transition to a low-carbon world. For financial organisations in particular, the impact of this transition poses significant challenges; primarily through underpinning the urgent need for organisations to build cultures which are capable of understanding, identifying and mitigating climate’s implications across several key financial and non-financial risks, balancing a phased transition towards low-carbon sustainability and corresponding reduction in more carbon-intensive exposures. This is alongside increasingly ethical customer expectations and wider obligations to the environment and society.

The recent publication of the first international standards by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) marks a significant milestone in global sustainability reporting. These standards, designed to establish a universal language for companies worldwide to communicate their sustainability efforts consistently and comparably, are expected to have a significant influence on the future of disclosure reporting. Crucially, the release of the new standards demonstrates the need for all organisations to prioritise the development of their capacity and capability to comprehend, measure, monitor, and accurately report their sustainability, and have a common language which fosters effective collaboration, enabling us all to actively contribute towards the transition to a sustainable future.

One of the aims of the Chartered Body Alliance (the Chartered Banker Institute, the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, and the Chartered Insurance Institute) is to support financial service organisations in navigating this transition and building their capabilities through education and knowledge. With this in mind, we would like to highlight a solution for financial firms: the Certificate in Climate Risk.

Why the Certificate in Climate Risk?

The Certificate in Climate Risk has been designed to develop learners' professional knowledge, understanding and skills relating to climate change, climate risk and sustainable finance, with a view to supporting customers, clients, colleagues, and communities with the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon world. The curriculum has been developed by a diverse range of experts and is suitable for professionals at every level of your organisation.

Not everyone needs to be a sustainability expert. However, firms should strive for a culture where everyone is capable of identifying, understanding and acting upon climate-related risks. Our Certificate is suitable for professionals at every level of your organisation to help them apply their expertise through a sustainable lens.
